When someone in Dar es Salaam searches for “hardware shop near me” or “printing Kariakoo”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those businesses have a Google Business Profile. It is free, and for a local business it is often the most valuable listing you can have.
Step 1: check whether you already exist
Search for your business name on Google Maps. A customer or Google itself may already have created a listing. If it exists, use “Claim this business” instead of creating a duplicate. Duplicates confuse customers and split your reviews.
Step 2: create or claim the profile
Go to Google Business Profile, sign in with a Google account the business controls (not a staff member's personal account), and enter:
- Your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard, with no extra keywords
- The category that best describes what you do
- Your address, or your service area if customers do not visit you
- Your phone number and website
Step 3: verify
Google needs to confirm that your business is real and at that location. Depending on your business, it may offer verification by phone, email, video or another method. Follow the instructions it shows you. Your profile will not appear fully until verification is complete.
Tip: place the pin carefully. Many Dar es Salaam addresses are described by landmarks, so drag the map pin to your exact entrance.
Step 4: complete everything
Profiles with complete information tend to perform better. Add:
- Opening hours, including special hours for public holidays
- Photos of your storefront, interior, products and team
- Services or products with short descriptions
- A description that says what you do and where, in plain words
- Attributes, such as payment methods and accessibility
Step 5: get reviews, honestly
Reviews influence both rankings and customer trust. Ask happy customers to leave a review, and make it easy by sharing your review link on WhatsApp after a sale. Never buy reviews or write them yourself. It breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly. Other customers read your replies.
Step 6: keep it current
Update hours when they change, post occasional updates, and add new photos. An out-of-date profile sends customers to a closed door.
Make your website match
Your business name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same way on your profile, your website and any directories. Consistency helps Google trust your details. Our local SEO checklist covers this and more.
