Many successful Tanzanian businesses run entirely on Instagram and WhatsApp Business. Customers find a post, send a message, pay by mobile money and collect the order. If that is working, the question is fair: why spend money on a website?
The honest answer is that you might not need one yet. But there are things social platforms cannot do, and it helps to know where the line is.
What social media does well
- It is where many customers already spend time.
- Posting is free and fast.
- WhatsApp lets you close a sale in a personal conversation.
Keep doing all of this. A website does not replace it.
What social media cannot do for you
You do not own your account
If an account is hacked, suspended or loses reach after an algorithm change, your shop window disappears overnight. A website and a domain in your own name stay yours.
It does not show up well on Google
When someone searches “furniture shop Mikocheni” or “accountant in Dar es Salaam”, Google mostly shows websites and Google Business Profiles, not Instagram posts. Customers who search rather than scroll may never find you.
It is hard for buyers to check you out
Larger clients, tenders and corporate buyers often want to see a website with your address, registration details and services before they call. A missing website can quietly cost you those deals.
Your information is scattered
Prices, delivery areas and opening hours end up buried in old posts and chat replies. A website keeps them in one place you control.
When a website starts to pay for itself
A website is usually worth it when at least one of these is true:
- Customers ask the same questions on WhatsApp every day.
- You sell to companies, institutions or customers outside your area.
- You want to appear when people search on Google.
- You want to take orders or bookings while you sleep.
Start small
You do not need a large site. A fast one-page site with your services, location, hours and a WhatsApp button, plus a Google Business Profile, covers most of the gap. You can add an online shop later.
